How to Identify Your Ideal Client

Whether you have just started your business, or you’ve been doing this for a while, identifying, finding, and securing your ideal clients is something that always seems to remain top of mind. Everything revolves around these people: your branding, your services, your marketing, sales, the list goes on and on! But what do you do when you can’t seem to nail down who exactly this person is?!

When I first began my business, I had a rough idea of who I wanted to work with. I was slowly able to figure out which people and types of businesses I loved serving the most, and which tactics helped me to find them the easiest! Figuring out who your ideal clients are doesn’t have to be a long, stressful game though. Today I have gathered a few of my best tips for identifying who your ideal client is, so that you can get to finding them that much sooner!

My favorite part of my business are the amazing people I get to serve every single day, but this didn’t happen by accident! Let’s get started with the basics!

Who are they?

The first place to start is by looking for the kind of person your ideal client is and the kind of business they have! This is when you can think of things like: their values, the type of business they have, why they do what they do, etc.

During this stage, it will be important to consider any specific niches, types of businesses, or demographics you want to stick to! Some examples of these could be: mindset coaches, female creatives, business coaches, health/wellness mentors, etc.

It may be hard to automatically know exactly who you want to work with, especially if you haven’t worked with many different kinds of clients yet. So, once you have started to dip your toes and take on a few clients, it is time to do some reflecting and evaluating! What are some things you like and enjoy about working with them? Are there any things you’ve realized are now “deal breakers” for you?

Another important thing to know is why your ideal client chooses to work with you over with another person in your niche! You can figure this one out by asking your current clients why they chose you, or if you haven’t had your first clients yet, you can reflect on what you do differently, what special things you bring to the table.

What do they need?

Hopefully, the answer to this question will be whatever services you offer! We’ve talked before about how to create irresistible offers, and the key here is to find the mix of what you love, and what your ideal client needs.

If you aren’t already sure about what exactly your ideal client needs, why don’t you ask them? Doing a little market research never hurts (and usually helps😉), and that way, you can be certain what your ideal client needs from you!

Taking it a step further, what is the bigger problem you are helping them solve? Does this person need you to manage their inbox and scheduling so that they can have the time to show up daily to do trainings on Instagram stories? Sure, inbox and scheduling management are what they need, but the bigger problem you’re solving is helping them to have more time for the things that truly light them up.

Since you now know what they need, it will also be helpful to know what is holding them back from getting what they need (AKA – What are their biggest objections to hiring you?). For some clients, they may be uncomfortable handing off work to someone else, and for another client, they could be nervous to invest the money in hiring someone.

Knowing what obstacles they are facing in getting the support they need is an important part of identifying your ideal client. Your offers and approach can automatically address their concerns, making the process for them as smooth as possible!

Are they a good fit for you?

Part of what makes this client “ideal”, is that they are an “ideal” match for you! Making sure that a potential client is a good fit before taking them on can feel a little weird at first, but it is well worth it in the long run and becomes so much easier the more you do it.

There are a few different things you can look for in a “good fit”. This will, however, differ from person to person, but I will stick to some of the more basic things to look out for! The first is, that they value the work you do and respect you as a person and a professional! When you speak to them, you know that they see the value in what you are offering them. They respect your time, energy, and they trust in your abilities.

The second thing you can look for, is that your ideal client’s budget for the project is in the same ballpark as what your services are priced at. You are an investment, and haggling your prices down for clients that don’t see it that way won’t lead to many fulfilling relationships. When designing your ideal client avatar, make sure to include details that would be helpful for determining their budget (like, at least 1 year into business, or something like that)!

Finally, you want to make sure your personalities mesh well together. Hopefully, you would be working together for a long time, so knowing what kind of personalities you tend to get along with the best will be great to keep in mind! For example, if you tend to be calm and reserved and get easily overwhelmed by bold, fiery people, your ideal client is probably someone with a similar demeanor as you! In contrast, some shy people love having super extroverted people around them! This part will be especially personal, so make sure to make these choices based on you and your personal preferences. These are just some small examples, there are definitely many other personality factors you could base this on!

How can you attract them?

Now that you know who your ideal client is, the next step is figuring out how you can best attract them to you and your business! When I first started out, I was so lost when it came to this part of the process. I had an idea of who I wanted to serve, but had no clue where to find them, let alone, how to make sure they found me!
